Thank you Cat for that charming, charmingly told, and informative story. I am
glad to learn about Lazarus 1 and Lazarus 2, and to have the syncretization of
the latter, San Lazaro, with Obaluaye (Babaluaye to the Cubans) clarified.
Where does that leave my earlier point? To the extent that Saturn represents
detachment from the things of the world (death being the ultimate expression of
that), the correspondence with San Lazaro the beggar also seems apt. Not every
beggar is per se detached from the things of the world, it is true, but I think
of, for example, Hindu sadhus, holy men who renounce the world to lead a life
of religious contemplation, and who become beggars to support themselves.
