Just posted something to soc.culture.african. Maybe some
part of the discussion will continue there. Or maybe it's
just as well that H-C pulled the plug. Whichever way, it
was fun.

As to African History, I would recommend Basil Davidson, a
Brit who does not deny the evidence of his senses. He has
written several books, including "A Short History of Africa"
which is all too short, and "Black Man's Burden", which I
bought only fairly recently and have not yet completely read.
van Sertima has some interesting stuff about African
presence in Europe, and also "They Came before
Columbus", regarding pre-Columbian African presence in the
New World. Maybe that's the one you got. I haven't mentioned
Diop, for obvious reasons, Obenga and others that have been
cited on the list. You might want to ask Paul or Gloria
for their suggestions also. They are both far better read
in the area than I am.
