Subject: Malcolm X Commemoration Committee May 19 Activities
May 2, 1999
Dear Friend and Supporter,
The anniversary of the birth of Brother Malcolm X is once again here
at hand and the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee is planning a full day of
activities on May 19th to honor his memory. This year, which would have been
his 74th birthday had he lived, is a very special one because it is the last
opportunity we will have in the Twentieth Century to pay homage to our great
revolutionary leader and teacher on the date of his birth. For that reason
we are encouraging families; mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons and
daughters to come together for an all-day tribute to Brother Malcolm.
Here is the schedule of events for May 19TH. The 34th annual
Pilgrimage to the Burial Ground will assemble at the State Office Building on
125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. at 9:00 A.M. The bus caravan will
proceed to Ferncliff Cemetery in Ardsley, N.Y. and will return to the State
Office Building at 2:00 P.M. A donation of $5 per person will be charged.
Traditionally all stores on 125th Street between 8th Avenue and
Malcolm X Blvd. close their doors from Noon until 4:00 P.M. to show their
respect for Brother Malcolm. On our return from the burial ground at 2:00
P.M. we will all assemble at the State Office Building for a Rally that will
feature speakers and entertainers reflecting on the revolutionary Black
Nationalist/Pan-African commitment of Malcolm. The rally will end at 4:00 P.M.
At 6:00 P.M. we will re-assemble at the Harriet Tubman Learning
Center at 127th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd., where the evening
program will be held. The theme for this year's program is "Build The
People's Militia". Over the past weeks - following the brutal murder of
Amadou Diallo by NYC police officers - lawyers and community activists have
been holding Town Hall type meetings in all 5 boroughs, to discuss with the
community the legal means at our disposal to defend and protect our
communities from this unrestrained slaughter. A report on these meetings will
be made during the evening by the lawyers and community leaders who will also
discuss a city-wide plan of action that has developed from the meetings and
which is designed to provide the means for our community self-defense.
Admission will be free.
We look forward to a full day with you, your family and friends on
Wednesday May 19, 1999. For additional information call me at 718-949-5153.
Thank you.
