On Prof. Oyibo's Unified Field Theory: A Letter to Prof. Oyibo

By Grisso*

(Note to readers: Prof. Oyibo is the African author of the Grand Unified Theorem, which succeeds where Einstein failed, that is in developing a unified field theory of physics that combines into a single theory the forces of gravity, electro-magnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. See here, here and here for background).

Dear Prof. Oyibo,

I have just read your "Grand Unified Theorem" (Nova, 2001).

I am pleased that this accomplishment falls to a fellow African. The gods must also be pleased, indeed I am sure they have set the whole thing up! Every so often it is important that the conceit of white supremacy must be punctured, not only for the sake of those who perpetrate it upon the planet, but also for those of us on the planet who are its victims. I can't think of a more delicious and deft assault on white supremacy than for our ancestors to raise up a son who has succeeded where Einstein failed. Now let us see what they do about the Nobel Prize which should surely follow. I will be patient about it, because academic scrutiny can take time. But this accomplishment must carry too high a profile for the wait to be too long. Likewise, I hope they're not too tardy in coughing up the Clay Prize (US$1 million) for the Navier-Stokes closed-form solution!

If I may, I have just a few questions/comments:

(1) I have delved a little into ancient Kamitic theology (see my articles on the web: AfricanCosmology The Ancient Wisdom in Africa, and On Science vs. Religion.... One of the ancient precepts which I encountered, thanks especially to Ra Un Nefer Amen (1990) is the notion of the Indivisible Duality of the pre-creation state of Pure Potential (also known as the Atum, or Amen, Nu, etc.), which is dualized into the principles of Matter and of Mind (see "African Cosmology", also "Ancient Wisdom"). In this duality, the principle of Matter includes Energy, also Spirit; and the principle of Mind includes Consciousness and Will. It is the latter principle (Mind) which ultimately provides Cause; it is the former principle through which Effect may be observed or experienced. In a metaphor which should be clear, Matter/Energy/Spirit is clay, the_medium_ through which the potter (Mind) expresses itself. Even the term "Field" used in this context of a "Field Theory", is suggestive moreso of the clay, within or over which the field metaphorically exists, than of the potter. If my understanding here is correct, a Grand Unified Theorem of the sort that you have developed may well describe Effect, but fundamental Cause remains well out of reach, and will forever remain out of reach of mathematics. In On Science vs. Religion, I write:

"I do not believe that the way to God's mind lies via systems of mathematical equations that seek to metaphorize the energy/matter reality of the (our) world. In terms of the Tree of Life, Sphere 8 (Sebek), which corresponds to the intellect, is inherently limited as a faculty of knowing. My argument is a simple one: you cannot understand God unless you take into account Consciousness/Will, because that is as much the nature of God and reality as is energy/matter. Consciousness is not to be comprehended in the same way as material reality, however. Mathematics will simply not do you a lot of good if you seek to understand, truly understand, Consciousness. Ultimately, the truths at issue must be experienced, or rather, insperienced, since one must go within to come to the understanding sought. As already stated, it is a lot like sex: One may describe sex as profusely as one can, with or without mathematical equations (which it hardly needs to be said are but a form of description), but truly one can have no real idea of what it is until one experiences it for oneself. God is the same. Therefore, I confidently state that Science, as currently understood and practiced in the West, will never fully permit the comprehension of God's creation. African spirituality, on the other hand, stands at least a chance."

I am pleased to see in your writings, given your reference to the Shabaka Stone and other religious accounts of Cosmological creation, also your very use of the term GAGUT, for "God Almighty's Grand Unified Theorem", that you are of more open mind than most in the Western scientific fraternity. I wonder whether you would care to comment on the notion of Indivisible Duality as it applies to God's creation, and specifically, whether your GUT necessarily leaves out of account the Mind (Fundamental Cause) aspect of that Indivisible Duality.

(2) Second, I am curious as to the status of quantum theory within your unified framework. Einstein rather famously once said that God does not play dice with the universe. Although on p. 72 of your book, you derive certain eigen functions from within your framework which you say may be interpreted as "probability distributions, to accommodate Heisenberg's uncertainty principle", I wonder whether you mean to say this is a necessary interpretation, or whether your framework allows for a deterministic interpretation also, that may vindicate Einstein's intuition.

(3) Third, what light does your unified framework shed on the question of twist in the universe? This is the notion that there exists a single axis around which spin all the galaxies. This notion contradictsEinstein's relativity theory which "requires a universe that, when viewed on a cosmic scale, is uniform in all directions -- that is, it has no meaningful north, south, east or west." (The Economist, April 26, 1997, "The Cosmic Corkscrew", p. 79). According to The Economist, Borge Nordland and John Ralston report in Physical Review Letters, physical evidence, based on the polarisation of radio waves from deep outer space, that would suggest that the universe has a single universal axis after all.

Once again, I congratulate you on your scientific/mathematical master stroke. With such as you working in this area, I can begin to feel confident that the false dichotomy between Science and Religion may begin to break down.

Sincerely,

(Note: The original letter was sent to Prof. Oyibo on November 17, 2002. No reply was received. If any kind reader with access to Prof. Oyibo would bring it to his attention, I would be most grateful.)
